Technology Classes

The staff of the Fort Bend County library system conducts entry-level classes on computer software, on a variable basis. Examples include “Microsoft Word Survival Basics” and “Mouse Practice for Scaredy-cats.” Classes are not available at all library locations. Printing and Scanning

Printing from the public-access computers is accomplished through the use of network laser printers. You must have a library card to print.

Wireless Printing 

Fort Bend County Libraries offers wireless-printing services for both patrons and library guests using personal electronic devices at most locations. Using the Library’s SmartALEC/Comprise printing system, people may send a print job from anywhere with an internet connection using their personal laptop, tablet, desktop, or mobile device to one of the listed Fort Bend County library locations.

Print size: Letter-size, plain paper only. Substitutions not allowed.
Limit: 50 pages per job

3D Printing

A 3D printer is available at this branch for use by anyone with a valid Fort Bend County Libraries card or a valid government-issued photo ID.

Patrons can bring print files in .stl format on a flash drive to the library. Library staff will be the ones to actually print the object. A fee of $0.20 per gram of filament used will be charged, with a $1.00 minimum.

Small items can take as little as 20 minutes to print, while other items can take much longer. Projects printed at the libraries have a 5-hour print time maximum. The 3D printers can print objects up to 8” wide x 8” high x 8” deep. Designs must be copyright-free or the patron must have license authorization.

Displays and Exhibits

Literacy and English as a Second Language 

Literacy is important to community growth and an adaptable, diverse workforce. Fort Bend County Libraries partners with the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, to provide tutoring for persons wishing to learn to read or to learn English as a second language. Mamie George Branch Library opened in November 1974, and was named for Mamie George, a well-known Fort Bend County philanthropist. Her family was very instrumental in the early development of the Fort Bend County library system. Funds for the building were donated by The George Foundation, and the land for the library site was donated by the Fort Bend Independent School District. The 4,900-square-foot building was designed by Wylie W. Vale and Associates, Wylie W. Vale, Design Architect. The branch was renovated in 1991, and in 1996, the small-business-center materials that were formerly housed at the Missouri City Branch were moved to the Mamie George Branch. Minor renovations in the spring of 2015 included the addition of a makerspace -- an area set aside in the library where patrons can create, edit, and publish special projects, such as digital and electronic art, videography, and much more. The makerspace project began in 2014, when the library received the Amigos Fellowship and Opportunity Award for innovation and development of new library services. The award included a grant to be used for equipment for the makerspace, which is the first of its kind for the FBCL system.

The Friends of Mamie George Branch Library was organized to support the branch with extra funds for things not provided for in the county budget. The group has an ongoing book sale in the branch, and over the years, the organization has purchased trees for the library's outside landscaping, as well as needed books for the collection. New interior signage for the building was also funded by the friends.
