Program Description

Description

Celebrate Black History month with a painting program inspired by famous African American painter and sculptor, Sam Gilliam. Patrons will get the chance to paint two small abstract paintings on canvas, inspired by Sam Gilliam's Blue Let and Wissahickon paintings.

"Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) is one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid-1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. For an African American artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change.Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions continue to take on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials."

Materials for this program are provided with the generous support of the Friends of First Colony Branch Library.

*Registration required; please register online, in-person or by calling 281-238- 2817. Registration opens February 4, 2025. *
